Applegate River

The Rogue rivers largest tributary starting high in the Red buttes just north of of Oregon in california as it makes its 54 mile journey to the Rogue. Running through mostly Oak chaparral woodland with a mixing of large pines, then large tracts of pasture and farmland from applegate reservoir on. Above the reservoir in the Siskiyous you'll find it to be more of small mountain stream vastly different from the tailwater below, fishing cad be had here and pressure is light but small brookies and a few lake runners are all one would find. Below the lake however is a very nice winter steelhead fishery with a good mix of both hatchery and wild fish. Private property is a definite issue as most of the river is guarded by homes, ranches, farms, ect. A few parks and open land leave just enough access to keep an angler happy. Their is also a sleeper trout fishery for mostly small cutthroats and resident rainbows, with enough time to learn the intricacies of this river you will be rewarded. Just minutes from Medford we've found the Applegate to be the perfect escape from the much bigger Rogue river.
