Hat Creek (Cassel)
If the powerhouse stretch had an ugly twin this would be it. the Cassel stretch pronounced c-a-s-t-l-e (thanks Klink) is really nothing more than a glorified ditch a concrete culver as it leads the way before abruptly dropping hundreds of feet to gain momentum to produce electricity and ultimately the lower hat creek we all love. With merely one 1\4 mile of stream access the size and looks alone would have most traveling fisherman heading on to "bigger and better water", but what it lacks on the aforementioned qualities it more than makes up for with the number and size of fish here. Rainbows, browns, and even a few large brook trout can be found, and a few different water patterns make it interesting. A large pool and a small amount of natural looking creek can be found on one side of the road, from there it flows through the concrete diversion and on to the pipes leading to the powerhouse. A PG&E campground is found right on it and is a great base camp for Baum lake, Hat creek, Pit river and other nearby fishing opportunities. Any method produces here wether pitching small dries at risers, swinging nymphs, or throwing large streamers at the big guys, you'll find it here. Albeit it still is just a ditch.
