Manzanita Lake

California's very own fly fishing only gem has quickly become a 5 fly favorite. Tucked in at the base of Mt. Lassen which serves as the most ominous backdrop for this beautiful setting lies Manzanita lake. Lassen park holds many lakes but none carry quite the same appeal as does Manzanita. Just under 100 acres and all the better for having a no-motor regulations keep the lake calm and serene, except for the line zinging as you hall in one of the lakes nice browns or rainbows. Originally stocked with loch leavens to go along with the naturally reproducing rainbows, but stocking has been non existent for decades now leaving one amazing fly fish only catch and release wild trout lake. Though crowded most summer alot are there for hiking and sightseeing leaving the lake for the fisherman. You'll likely have no problem finding fish as your likely to see a large brown or bow cruise right by you, however catching them is likely to challenge you as these fish grow old and wise. A tube or small boat will allow better access to the lake but with a pretty good amount of shallows and a good trail all the way around make wading a sneaky but fun experience. 4-6 wt rods with all manner of lines and methods produce here so bring a full assortment when you come. as stated before a floating device or other small watercraft will get you the most access but wading opportunities do exist. A $10 dollar fee is required for entry to Lassen park for 10 days and camping can be found there or any of the other campgrounds which are plentiful in the area.
