Trinity River

Dark and mysterious as it are both river and fish. Gaining life from the trinity mts. before being impounded by Lewiston lake near the town of Lewiston, the water hear has almost a grayish blue tint adding to the mystique. Boasting an incredible winter steelhead fishery, the trinity offers good fishable water all the way to its confluence with the Klamath river. Both wild and hatchery steelhead are found as well as an occasional brown. Fish here also reach goliath proportions and with good fishable numbers the trinity is fine place for chasing steel. Making fishing even better is a fly fishing only stretch with seasonal regulations, add a sleeper brown trout fishery and it equals a fun yet difficult place with enough character and open river to keep you coming back for years. Lewiston is a good place to start because you can either head up river to the fly only stretch or the many miles above the lake in the headwaters, or go as far down as ones heart content and pull off just about anywhere as the river follows closely to highway 299. 6-8 wt rods for the steelhead while 3-5 wt rods will suffice for trout. Many classic steelhead patterns were born on this river and are still effective here, while a good group of hatching insects will keep the trout bum busy.
