Hat Creek (Powerhouse #2)

A little piece of Montana found in northern California. Part of the Pit river project a group of power dams that follow the way to lake shasta but not before creating cold, clear, highly oxygenated trout growing water. Flowing from the huge humming old square building it makes its way to the storied powerhouse riffle, one of the most fished sections of river any where. From there it journeys onward to the famed carbon flats stretch where it slowly meanders and curves through awe inspiring ranch land that's a former cattle pasture. Now it picks up speed via grade before emptying into lake britton. One of caltrouts best pet projects reviving the land and bringing back a wonderful fishery that had almost been destroyed by degradation and squawfish that had migrated up from lake britton and overpopulated quickly, out competing for food causing a strong decline in trout numbers and size. But this creek has rebounded strong and now is one place on almost all fly fisherman's places to visit list. 4-6 wt rods with a floating and possibly sink-tip lines. Nymphing the powerhouse riffle is most effective for catching fish but once you've mastered that try your hand at matching the hatch to rising trout in the carbon flats stretch. A technical fishery for sure and one that doesn't like sharing its secrets but nonetheless if your gonna be skunked it might as well be here right?
